Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Snyder District Curriculum

The mathematics curriculum at Snyder Independent School District schools helps students develop skills in every area of mathematics. Students begin by learning numeration, including counting. They then discover how to place numbers in equations and how to find missing numbers. In high school the students can extend their knowledge by taking classes in algebra, geometry, statistics and probability or in calculus. Linear, exponential, and quadratic models are utilized as well in advanced math. Students interpret expressions for functions with regard to the situation they model.

Snyder Independent School District science curriculum includes the study of biology, chemistry, physics and ecology. Each of these sciences allow students to look at the world from different perspectives. From the elementary years through high school, each student learns about cycles of life, water, rocks, stars and more. They begin by looking at each object from a general perspective and then they begin to look at each item close-up. Each of these studies require work in the lab or in the field as students learn to use the tools required. This allows them to look at aspects of their careers, or education, after graduation in different ways.

Chalk Talk: Mentoring

Mentoring is the idea of a shared relationship between a student and an adult. Through mentoring the two share values, passions, traditions and attitudes in order to help enhance each other’s' lives. Often the mentor can be a kind of role model, support and encourager. Mentors can help students that need academic help as well as those that succeed academically. No matter the economic situation of families involved, self-confidence and aspirations can be built upon even beyond graduation. The benefits that can come from a mentor relationship are more than what are stated. Parents that are interested in finding a mentor for a child should look in the business area that the child is interested in or talk with a guidance counselor for assistance.
