Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Spearfish District Curriculum
Literacy is an important element of the curriculum. Language Arts courses go beyond teaching independent or fiction reading and help students develop the skills necessary to read a diverse selection of texts. This is done so that students are able to learn from the written texts in science, history and other subjects. Teachers model ways of decoding meaning, understanding author’s intent, and developing one’s own interpretative and critical thinking.
In Math and Science, students learn specific skills for problem-solving and testing hypothesis, enabling their broad understanding of these subjects. Technology is a major driving force in instruction. This school system believes that each student should receive a laptop to use, and the teachers use technology in the classroom through various methods. The Smartboard, iPads, computer labs, technology courses, and other technologies are used to enhance instruction and offer students a tool which they want to engage with.

Chalk Talk: The Role of the High School Guidance Counselor
The high school guidance counselor has many roles. They do not necessarily teach classes during the day, like other teachers, but they are responsible for counseling students on demand. One thing they do is handle all the files and records of the school population. If a high school student is dealing with personal and emotional issues, the high school guidance counselor has been trained to deal with this. The guidance counselor is responsible for coordinating standardized testing, which is an enormous amount of work. Also, the guidance counselor handles homebound instruction and collaborating with teachers about specific students.
