St. Anthony District and Curriculum

K-12 students in St. Anthony attend the St. Anthony-New Brighton Independent School District. The district’s mission is to “educate, prepare, and inspire a community of lifelong learners.” To achieve this mission, the district has focused on building small, student-centered learning communities. Small class sizes facilitate individual student success because of the increased time they have with their teachers to address areas of weakness. Students at all grade levels are encouraged to pursue their areas of interest and find specific topics or subject areas that excite them. Encouraging this academic curiosity is a central component of St. Anthony-New Brighton’s success in promoting strong student development and a love of learning.

We currently cover the following St. Anthony-area school district: St. Anthony-New Brighton Independent School District.

Chalk Talk: The Debate Regarding Retention

Holding struggling students back has long been an intervention of choice for districts that wish to help the child acquire the skills and knowledge they need in order to move to the next grade level. However, there are now concerns that this type of intervention actually causes more harm than good. Opponents of retention point out that being held back is emotionally devastating for kids. In addition to feeling as though they aren’t capable of success in school, retention can cause kids to feel as though they are stupid as well. Additionally, studies shows that any gains students see by being held back a grade disappear within two to three years. Instead, districts are now turning to more proactive approaches to ensure kids make the progress they need, such as specialized learning programs to boost reading or math skills, mentoring programs, and tutoring.
