Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Stonington District Curriculum
The Common Core Standards provide a path for in depth understanding of content. In the early years, the focus in English Language Arts is to enable literacy through reading, writing, and speaking. As each student progress, the curriculum helps students evolve their abilities, conceptual understandings, and critical thinking skills. In Mathematics, the number of required topics each year is reduced allowing time for students to gain a deeper understanding in the topics of algebra, geometry, data analysis and mathematic thinking.
Each schools administration is dedicated to ensure these goals are met and are working with teachers to provide professional development opportunities. The use of common assessments is also important in providing the teachers and district with actionable insight into the progress of their students and teaching practices. Through the assessments that measure student’s abilities in specific curricular expectations, teachers are able to instruct students more effectively.

Chalk Talk: The Importance of Reading
Study after study over the past several decades points to the critical importance of parents reading to their young children and lasting benefits over time. Reading shouldn’t stop just because your child learns to read on their own. Read more complex books to your older child or perhaps start a family book club. The bonding it creates and the importance it places on reading and literacy in the classroom can have monumental impact on their education throughout school and the rest of their life. Simple acts of reading together will create higher test scores and self-esteem.
