Chalk Talk: The Significance of Phonemic Awareness

Phonemic Awareness is acknowledgment of various sounds within words. Assessment of students at an early age, sometimes as early as four years old, to check for phonemic awareness is usually completed in public school systems. Students that know separate sounds in words are more likely to be ready for learning to read. In order to increase phonemic awareness, children should be read to at an early age, have letters and words pointed out and discussed, and read all manner of text available.
