Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Temple District Curriculum

The social studies curriculum begins with showing students the routines that are needed to run a classroom. They then extend this to include schools, as they look at the school as a small community. These ideas are able to be used throughout their social studies education as students learn to look at not only the school as a community but families, neighborhoods, cities, states, and countries as communities as well.

The reading curriculum at Temple Schools begins with the students learning how to share their thoughts about books that are introduced to them at reading time. Soon they begin to learn how there is a purpose behind what the authors write and they discover different strategies to help them when they are puzzled by a word or meaning of a group of words. As they become older they learn that there are different types of books such as fiction, expository books, and procedural books. Plus, they learn how to make connections during a literary discussion.

Temple District Curriculum Used in Our In-Home Tutoring Programs

Temple Independent School Districts’ curriculum is a combination of the state standards, found in the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills, and the years of experience of their teachers. This mixture helps prepare the students for an ever-changing world. Additionally, there are many extracurricular and athletic opportunities to help students connect their school day to their personal interests. Community service is also emphasized, and students have many opportunities to contribute their talents to helping out within the community.

Chalk Talk: Building Reading Skills

Some children have to be pulled from a book that they are reading. Others struggle to read assigned books. Either way, people are exposed to reading everyday of their lives, in some way. To help build a love of books have a time everyday where all distractions are put away or turned off and spend time as a family reading books. Make sure that the child has access to books that are an interesting. Whether they enjoy how-to, informational or fiction, they are reading. Another activity to help build reading skills is to schedule a regular family-time at the library. With these activities, a child will develop a healthy alternative to the distractions in this world.
