Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Titusville District Curriculum

Upon completing elementary school Math classes, students should be able to divide whole numbers, add and subtract decimals and fractions, calculate volume and surface area, construct graphs, and convert units of measure. In middle school, students transition from arithmetic to algebra. High school math classes available include algebra, intensive math, advanced algebra with financial applications, math for college readiness, analysis of functions, pre-calculus, geometry, calculus, and advanced topics in math.

The Language Arts curriculum starts students out with oral language, phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, comprehension, spelling, and writing. Middle school students develop skills in reading, writing, listening, viewing, and speaking. They may also take classes in journalism or speech and debate. In high school, students learn reading strategies, writing strategies, literary forms, critiquing, language use, and media analysis.

Chalk Talk: Saving Money When You’re Young

Teaching your child how to save money at a young age can give him or her financial security for the future. First, help the child establish a savings goal. Then provide a place for him or her to keep savings, such as a piggy bank or a savings account. Now help him or her determine how much to put into savings. Teach your child that he or she does not need the latest fashion or gadget. A comfortable lifestyle should be lived within budget constraints. When your child wants to make a purchase help him or her find the best deal. Not being a spendthrift when young will lead to greater wealth later in life.
