Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Tiverton District Curriculum

The curriculum provide a continuum of increasingly challenging benchmarks for what students should be able to do at any given level of schooling. In the reading curriculum, students are expected to read a wealth of different genres of literature and informational texts. Along with instruction in reading comprehension skills, students practice writing logically, speaking, listening effectively, and presenting. Students are instructed to be proficient in utilizing current media and technology to engage in reading and writing tasks.

In terms of the mathematics curriculum, the key is building a firm foundation of the basic concepts such as whole numbers, fractions, division, and multiplication. Equipped with these skills during kindergarten through the fifth grade, students can move on to master the more complex operations that will be necessary for algebra, geometry, and probability and statistics. The high school standards are focused not only on ability to calculate equations and solve problems, but also to apply mathematical thinking skills to daily life.
