Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Tomball District Curriculum
The English curriculum at Tomball Independent School District helps students become expert writers. Students begin by learning about the parts of speech and how to use these to create a sentence or paragraph that conveys the ideas that the students want to share. From here they learn how to write essays or reports that include hook sentences, thesis statements and body and conclusion paragraphs. With these basics the students are able to face any writing they may need to do in college or in a career.
In Science, students learn about the nature of the earth and the science that goes into improving it. Students also learn about a how different land features formed and the effects of the environment on them. This includes an analysis of weathering, erosion, and crustal deformation. At a more advanced level, students analyze engineering innovations and how mistakes in engineering can inform designers of better processes to develop new products. The means by which natural resources are obtained, such as through mining, are also assessed.

Chalk Talk: Helping Students with Disabilities with Homework
Homework that is assigned by teachers serve different purposes such as to give additional learning time, build study and organizational skills, and to help keep parents informed. Students that have disabilities may see it as a waste of time. Parents can help overcome this. First lines of communication need to be open between the parent and the teacher to make sure that assignments are clear and not too lengthy. Next, ask what the policies are for late, or missing work and if there are any adaptations available. At home parents can set up a homework area that is separated from distractions and is set up with the materials that may be needed. Finally, check a homework journal to make sure that all assignments have been completed and that the child knows where it is so they can make sure to turn it in. Helping a child with their work only takes a little bit of time, but can prove to be helpful to all involved.
