Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Torrington District Curriculum

Torrington has implemented a curriculum with clearly defined goals in the content areas of English, Math, Science and Social Studies. For each area, the expectation is that students will master key areas of learning by building skills year after year. New technology and updated instructional techniques work together to increase the rigor of the district’s curriculum so the needs of the students are met and they are prepared for the demands of the world economy.

The Torrington School Board adopted a 3-year strategic plan to better meet the needs of its students, families and staff. It includes the introduction of common assessments so that all students are held responsible for the same information, at the same level of rigor. They have also incorporated more technology into the curriculum and made an effort to create report cards for each school so that parents can track the progress at each school.

Chalk Talk: The Importance of Play

With serious standardized tests being shouldered by more children at an earlier age, even as young as first grade, parents are beginning to wonder where the fun in school has gone. All is not lost though, give a kid a shovel, a stick or nothing at all, send them outside, and watch their imaginations spring to life. What better way to learn about a plant’s structure but to pull one out of your backyard flower pot and take a look. How will a child know what an earth worm is and important function it serves but to dig one up and hold it in their hands. Even building a fort teaches them the basics of physics without even knowing it. In the end, play will teach them what a textbook never will.
