Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Truth or Consequences District Curriculum

The Truth or Consequences Municipal School District has implemented the state mandated Common Core State Standards (CCSS) in all of the district schools. Common Core provides a coherent curriculum for English and Language Arts and Mathematics ensuring that schools across New Mexico have the same rigorous academic expectations for students. In English and Language Arts students are expected to learn to read, write, speak and listen in English. The emphasis is on developing skills that students can use in college and in the workforce.

In Mathematics, students learn core basic math coursework including computational skills, algebra, geometry, statistics, and measurement. The focus is on helping students to become math literate by the time they complete high school, and be able to apply what they have learned to higher math and in their work. Coursework is progressive with students building on the skills they learned the previous year, enhancing their problem-solving and math reasoning strategies.

Chalk Talk: Learn About Women & Aviation

At the Western Antique Aeroplane and Automobile Museum kids can learn a lot about planes who designed and flew them. On the museum website there is a section dedicated to women and aviation where parents and kids can find stories about female pilots who have never received the recognition they deserve. The site has information on women pilots who flew commercial, recreational,or military planes. Kids can read about Melba Beard, an early aviator who won the Amelia Earhart Trophy Race in 1935, Amelia Earhart herself and the Ninety Nines, a group of women aviators who were dedicated to promoting women in aviation.
