Union District and Curriculum
The Union County School District has the mission to “commit to students first in building community, excellence, and lifelong learning.” They are committed to success and have implemented the Common Core State Standards in order to help their students to achieve their goals. Learning begins with the fundamentals and builds sequentially so that students develop a breadth and depth of knowledge in each core subject. Students are also able to develop key critical thinking skills by accessing their prior knowledge to build new understanding.

Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Union District Curriculum
The Common Core Math Standards help students to master concepts at a great depth. Students learn to dig deeply into each concept and use higher level thinking skills to explain their thought processes. They don’t simply learn the steps to solve a particular type of problem, but understand a variety of ways to find the answer through the practice of critical thinking skills.
In English Language Arts classes, students learn to read and write across the content areas. They acquire skills that help them synthesize information in the both fiction and nonfiction writing. Rather than telling students what they are going to read about, as was the practice past, students are challenged to jump in to the text and figure it out on their own. Students develop critical thinking skills such as analysis and interpretation by doing so. These skills offers better preparation for post-secondary studies and the workforce.

Keeping Informed: Recent Union Educational News
- Union County Receives Excellent Growth Rating - Union County School District received an excellent rating for growth on the state report card from the South Carolina Department of Education. This rating describes growth regarding student achievement over the last year. Great job to all students and staff of Union County!
- High School Students Recycling - Students at Union County High School are participating in a school wide recycling program. The current program includes paper and cardboard; however, students are hoping to expand the recycling program to plastic in the future.
- District Financials Right on Track - Union County School District has figured out a way to keep on target with their budget without borrowing money to pay the bills. Much of the state and local funding for the school district does not come until after the fiscal year has begun; however, through the use of the fund balance, Union County is able to finance education without borrowing money on interest.
