Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Vermillion District Curriculum
The Common Core Curriculum is focused on the Math and Literacy skills that students need to develop as foundations for all other learning. Literacy is taught so that students may apply their reading skills in all subjects. Math is taught so that problem-solving, practical applications, and the development of quantitative reasoning skills are instilled. Each area is supported increasingly by technology, through its use as a teaching tool and as a entry point for student learning.
Literacy skills include reading comprehension strategies such as decoding meaning, interpreting texts and providing analysis take place. Students are expected to develop their language-based skills in vocabulary and grammar, and also to apply that knowledge to writing. In Math, areas of algebraic thinking and patterning, geometry and measurement, and data and statistical analysis are central to what students are expected to learn. These abilities are deemed essential for college and career goals.
