Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Vicksburg District Curriculum

Literature is a part of a student’s life from the first day of school at Vicksburg Warren Public Schools. Children are introduced to a variety books all during their kindergarten year. By the end of the year, the child is able to identify a book by its name and its author. By the fourth grade, the student is able to identify the main focus of a book. These skills progress and when students are in high school, they are able to analyze and interpret the book and its meaning.

By the end of first grade at Vicksburg Warren Public Schools, a child is able to add and subtract as well as deconstruct a number by using base-ten math. As they progress into the intermediate years, the student is able to identify a number to the thousandth place, plus they learn to add and subtract equations up to four digits. This knowledge is taken with the child to high school as they learn how to work with equations and functions in geometry, algebra, calculus and trigonometry.

Chalk Talk: How to Encourage a Life-Long Love of Reading

Reading is a pathway to adventure and fun. It is also food for the imagination. To help make reading important in a child’s life, a few steps may be required. First, include in the weekly errands, a trip to the library. Let the children explore the topics that interest and excite them. If possible, allow them to have their own library card, to give them a sense of responsibility. Another fun way to encourage reading in a child is to make it a part of their daily schedule. Set aside so many minutes a day as reading time. At this time, all members of the household have to stop whatever they are doing and read. If this is made a part of a child’s life from an early age, it will become a habit that will be hard for them to break as they get older. A child will also become more interested in reading if they have their own books that they can read again and again.
