Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Waconia District Curriculum
Waconia’s elementary-level social studies curriculum includes a study of geography. Students examine simple maps, charts, and graphs and learn how to interpret the data represented by them. Learners also become familiar with directions, latitude and longitude, and various geographic features such as mountain ranges and rivers. The curriculum introduces students to the concept of human geography. Learners explore how humans interact with and manipulate the environment to meet their needs.
The high school science curriculum in Waconia includes an examination of the physical sciences. Learners become familiar with Newton’s universal law of gravitation, and use that knowledge to calculate the attraction between objects. Calculations of energy are undertaken as well. Students describe how energy transfers take place, particularly with regard to sound waves. As part of that study, learners develop an understanding of pitch, loudness, amplitude, and frequency. Concepts related to electricity are explored as well.

Chalk Talk: Benefits of National Curricula
While there has been much debate surrounding the Common Core State Standards, there are a number of benefits to be derived from having a nationalized curriculum. Other countries have adopted nationalized standards, and their students’ performance demonstrates its effectiveness. Finland, New Zealand, and the Netherlands all have national curricula and their students consistently outperform U.S. students. Having a curriculum like Common Core brings all students throughout the nation up to the same speed. Families that are mobile would no longer have to worry about whether their child would be ahead or behind in his or her new school. Regardless of what state they are in or move to, the student will still be experiencing the same curriculum. National standards also help students develop essential 21st century skills, such as critical thinking, problem-solving, and analytical skills.
