Wasilla District and Curriculum

The goal of the MSBSD Math curriculum is to meet the needs of diverse learners and to develop students’ computational, reasoning, and analysis skills. Foundational content and skills learned in elementary school leads to geometry and algebra in middle school. For advanced middle-level students there are course options that can be counted for high school credit. The high school curriculum builds math skills that are essential for daily living. Advanced Placement options are available for students who want to pursue college-level mathematics.

We currently cover the following Wasilla-area school district: Matanuska-Susitna Borough School District.

Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Wasilla District Curriculum

Science education in the district frequently takes advantage of the area’s unique geography and natural resources. This place-based approach puts students in the field with scientists through the Sitka Sound Science Center mentor program. The MSBSD Science curriculum is inquiry-based and student-centered. From the early grades through high school, students are involved in developing questions and using scientific methods to find answers. For example, third graders learn about the salmon life cycle by visiting a local hatchery and examining water samples to find the macro invertebrates that salmon eat.

The MSBSD wants all students to become proficient readers who love books. In the early grades instruction focuses on foundational skill in reading, writing, speaking and listening. Middle and high school students read increasingly complex fiction and nonfiction works and learn how to write informational and persuasive, convincing essays. Students also develop listening and speaking skills that uses critical thinking.
