Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Waterford District Curriculum

Tightly aligned with state and national standards, the Waterford Public School District followed the Connecticut Common Core State Standards Initiative as well as using the Smarter Balanced Assessment Consortium as its basis for curriculum. Teachers are training using professional development opportunities in Writing Instruction, Literacy Instruction, and recently worked to revise the Science and Art curriculum. Social Studies, Physical Education, and Health curriculum have also been recently revised and renewed to best meet the needs of the students in the Waterford School District.

At the elementary level, students complete coursework in reading, English/Language Arts, mathematics, science, social studies, world language, health, and music. Progressing to the middle and high school level, students are exposed to further areas such as business, American studies, technology education, and family and consumer sciences. Depending on student ability and skills, students have the opportunity to take honors, Advanced Placement and UCONN Early College Experience.

Chalk Talk: Homework TIps

Are you stuck at home with a math problem or science question that you can’t seem to find the answer to? Use the following tips to help solve your dilemma. Complete your homework shortly after-school so that the material and questions are fresh in your memory. Waiting until late into the night can only exacerbate the problem. Ask for help! If your parents are home, then ask them for guidance and see if they can help you tackle that nagging problem. Phone a friend! If you have a friend in class, ask them for clarification, as they just may be your lifelines. If your school or district offers a homework helpline, use it! Don’t be afraid to ask another teacher or adult for help whenever you need it. Email your teacher or have your parent email the teacher and ask for assistance in understanding the problem. If you are still hung up, complete the remainder of the assignment and ask the teacher first thing tomorrow so she/he can help get your on track!
