Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Watertown District Curriculum

The Math curriculum oversees major areas of learning like algebra, geometry and quantitative data analysis. In algebra, the students are required to utilize and identify mathematical properties, such as the associative, communicative, distributive, and identity, find the values of a variable in an algebraic expression, translate words into mathematical equations and inequalities, use inverse operations to solve integers, use coordinates, graphs, and quadrants, and solve complex algebraic problems. They also are required to use graphs, tables, and models within multi-step problems, and use ratios in problem solving.

In Reading, the students are exposed to reading novels of choice and doing a great deal of reflective writing. Reading, reflection upon the reading through discussions and writing, oral language presentations, as well as learning the conventions of grammar and structure assist the students in becoming critical thinkers. These same skills are applied to student writing, which is emphasized across the curriculum.
