Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Waupun District Curriculum
Waupun’s students engage in an environmental education curriculum that introduces them to basic concepts in scientific studies. Learners explore the process of the scientific method, learning how to make observations, ask appropriate questions, and collect and analyze data. Students examine data and interpret it in order to make more informed explanations of environmental phenomena as well. The scientific investigations students undertake further their ability to revise their understanding of a topic based upon the empirical evidence they collect. Learners likewise acquire the collaborative skills to work with each other to solve environmental problems.
High school students in Waupun take part in health courses that seek to improve their understanding of internal and external forces that impact their overall wellbeing. Internal influences like self-esteem and self-concept are explored, with students gaining an understanding of how one’s perception of him or herself can greatly determine how one takes care of their body and mind. Learners examine external forces as well, including the influence that society has on people’s health decision-making processes.
