Educating Our Parents: Understanding the West Covina District Curriculum

In the core subjects of Language Arts, Math and Science, student learning covers the major focuses of each subject and details the specific skills students will learn during their studies. In English/Language Arts, the subject is organized around reading literary and informational texts, writing processes, and other forms of communication. In Math, the major topics are numerical operations, algebraic operations, geometry and measurement, and statistics and probability. In Science, students learn how to investigate natural phenomenon in earth and environmental science, biology, chemistry, physics and technology.

Students are able to deepen their understanding by learning and using their prior knowledge to build new knowledge. This also helps students develop higher-order thinking skills like interpretation, reasoning and process-oriented thinking. The development of these skills support the advanced learning students will do in college.
