West Haven District and Curriculum

West Haven Public Schools follow the Connecticut Common Core of Standards, which strives to increase rigor across all grades and subjects and aligns with college standards to better prepare students for higher education. The standards use higher level thinking criteria to encourage greater thought and learning such as analysis, reasoning, justification, and problem solving. There are grade-by-grade standards that will limit repetition and help students continue to move forward in their education each year. The standards are internationally benchmarked, in that they meet the standards of other high performing countries so that the students can compete in a global economy.

The great focus of the curriculum in West Haven is to ensure all students are college ready when they graduate high school. The standards are built on what are the best practices amongst all states to collectively build the best curriculum possible. The standards are clear and focused to make them easily taught by teachers and in depth learning by students.

We currently cover the following West Haven-area school district: West Haven Public Schools.

Educating Our Parents: Understanding the West Haven District Curriculum

In mathematics, fewer topics are covered to allow greater understanding by students and limit the remediation needed by students when
they move into higher education. It also allows teachers to be able to take their time in teaching the standards until they were truly
mastered by the students and that each grade level has a clear connection to the next grade level. In elementary school, they are
focused on building a fundamental foundation in the understanding of numbers and then that is built upon in higher grades with a
focus on analysis and algebra. In Language Arts there is a focus on literacy, reading comprehension, writing and analysis. Another
broad foundation is laid at an early age to provide a base to build on as students’ progress through each grade. Building these high
standards in Math and Language Arts lays the foundation for continuing that into science, technology, and social studies as well.

Chalk Talk: Reducing Stress towards the SAT's

Many American students are breathing a sigh of relief recently as the importance placed on the SAT for college entrance is easing. In recent years colleges are starting to rethink whether this one test is a true indicator of a student's college readiness. They instead are looking at the student as a whole not just their performance on one test. They can look at their overall GPA, the amount of rigorous courses taken, and their achievements outside of the classroom. The SAT's have historically been one of the single most important exams taken by high school students as they prepare for their college applications but now they can focus more on the well roundedness of their entire education instead.
