Educating Our Parents: Understanding the West Point District Curriculum
The Social Studies curriculum introduces students to a variety of subjects from community helpers to map skills, to the role of the United States Government. When these students complete their education in these schools they will have been taught about ancient civilizations, Colonial United States, revolutions in the United States, Europe and Latin America. West Point students will be ready to face the world, after graduation, with a understanding of what it took to make the world what it is today.
In the Science program, students have the opportunity to learn how to safely use laboratory equipment so that they can study ecology, atoms, matter, mitosis and meiosis. Curricular goals include the development of scientific inquiry skills, testing and verifying hypotheses, evaluating outcomes and communicating information. Students also have the opportunity to take classes in biology, botany, chemistry, physical science and physics in high school.

Chalk Talk: What Is STEM Learning?
STEM learning encompasses the subjects of science, technology, engineering and math. The goal is to teach integrated skills between these subjects, drawing upon practical applications as the basis for conceptual understanding in any of the individual subjects. This is an area that is vastly growing, as resources from industry and government are coming together to enhance STEM learning programs in schools across the country. The focus on technical skills that will be relevant to 21st century pursuits is central to these efforts, as is the teaching of key inquiry and problem-solving skills.
