Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Westminster District Curriculum

The school districts consisting of JEFFCO Public Schools, Adams County School District 50, and Adams 12 Five Star Schools all serve students living in the city of Westminster. Each school district offers students excellent educational opportunities through specific programs. These programs are outlined in the paragraphs below:

Adams County School District 50

Students who attend schools in District 50 are pushed to excel and prepared for success. All middle school students are encouraged to participate in Gateway to Technology, a course that uses hands-on learning to teach basic technology principles. This course is a viewed as a precursor for high school students interested in joining the District's STEM school or participating in project Lead the Way at Westminster High School. Programs such as International Baccalaureate (IB), Career and Technical Education (CTE), and the CenterStage Theatre Company are also available to students.

Adams 12 Five Star Schools

Approximately 43,000 students are educated by the Adams 12 Five Star School District leading the District to view itself as a large campus of opportunity with a close-knit feel. The International Baccalaureate (IB) program is available for grades K-12 while the Advanced Academic Program (AAP) and the Gifted and Talented (GT) Program are available for students in grades K-8. The specialized Studio School for grades K-5 provides students with extra instruction in drama, visual arts, and music and dance. Students interested in the disciplines of mathematics and science can receive advanced education through the District's STEM Magnet Schools for elementary and middle school students. High school students can also participate in the SOAR Honors Program to receive individualized study in a specific academic discipline while completing standard coursework.

JEFFCO Public Schools

The JEFFCO School District believes in producing students with "Bright Futures" through enabling students to become their best selves. The district offers a variety of schools to meet the specific needs of a diverse student population. Neighborhood schools provide a traditional educational experience while holding students to the high standards developed by the Colorado Department of Education. Option Schools offer novel experimental learning programs and technical training programs. Special schools offer programs such as International Baccalaureate (IB), Ascent Advanced learning, and online education. Each school option provides students a comprehensive curriculum of Language Arts, Mathematics, and Science principles in a student-specific learning environment.

Chalk Talk: Extracurricular Activities Can Boost Student Achievement

Most students devote many hours of rigorous studying to achieve academic excellence for future success. The importance of extracurricular activities, however, should also be viewed as an avenue to success. Many studies have demonstrated that students who participate in after-school programs or sports groups learn valuable skills related to teamwork, fundraising, and leadership. These valuable social skills can be seen as the precursor to advances in careers as diverse as marketing, technology development, and management. Students who excel both inside and outside the classroom develop skill sets that provide them with the tools to truly succeed.
