Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Willmar District Curriculum

Learning how to effectively read informational texts is a primary area of emphasis in the Willmar English language arts curriculum. High school students acquire the skills necessary to analyze information and draw inferences from texts. Determining the main idea of informational texts and identifying the supporting points of the main idea are skills that are acquired as well. Learners examine the way in which authors structure their texts and how that structure helps or hinders the reader’s understanding of the information being presented.

Willmar’s visual and performing arts curriculum introduces elementary school learners to basic concepts related to dance. Learners identify the characteristics of dance common to all cultures, and explore how those characteristics improve the quality of the dance presented. Children learn basic dance movements, while also gaining the ability to improvise when the situation is warranted. Students learn how to give constructive feedback to others, while also developing the ability to take constructive criticism in order to improve their own performance

Chalk Talk: Benefits of P.E. in School

Physical education classes offer many more benefits than just giving kids time to run around and play. Rather, P.E. courses teach students essential skills that will allow them to be successful in many endeavors in their lives. Improved physical fitness ensures that children understand what it takes to be at their optimal level of health and wellness. Students in P.E. learn self-discipline, effective communication skills, and how to work as a member of a team toward a common goal. P.E. also offers students a great way to release stress and tension, while also fostering stronger relationships with their peers. One of the greatest benefits of P.E. classes is that they teach kids how to be responsible for themselves, not just regarding physical health, but in all aspects of life.
