Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Willow Grove District Curriculum

Willow Hill Elementary in the Abington School District focuses on teaching courses through a “hands-on” approach. The elementary curriculum places great emphasis on learning the building blocks to each academic subject, with a particular focus on literacy and mathematical problem-solving. They use peer groups for learning projects. They focus on building confidence in each student, helping in issues of self esteem. They strive to integrate different subjects together to make them more meaningful and applicable to the students.

Upper Morland School District has a very good world languages program, recognized by the state Modern Language Association. They teach French, German, and Spanish, where they have created curriculum which helps students understand not only the language, but cultures associated with those languages so that students will be able to interact in a multi-lingual and multi-cultural world.

Chalk Talk: How to Help Your Child Who Is Struggling With a Class

Most of us remember that one class that caused us problems. We just couldn’t understand the concepts presented or couldn’t follow what the teacher was saying. Some students struggle in more than one or even all of their classes. So what can you do to help? First, talk to your child to find out what is going on. Do they have problems understanding the material? If so, why? Can you, personally, assist them? This would also be a good time to talk to their teacher. Find out if there is any way they can help your child individually or if there is an afterschool tutoring club. Apart from these things, look into private tutoring for your child if other interventions aren’t working or won’t fit into their schedule. Tutoring can be done by an organization individual or student depending on circumstances. Find out what will be best for your child in order to help them through the difficult classes and move beyond them in a positive way.
