Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Wilson District Curriculum

The Wilson County School District’s curriculum guidelines follow both the new Common Core Standards and the North Carolina Essential standards. Both set of standards are used as the basis for classroom instruction and statewide assessments. The goals are to ensure all students receive a high standard of education, and are prepared for success in post-secondary education.

Standard level English courses follow strands of reading, writing, listening, viewing and researching. Writing skills include writing in expressive, informational, argumentative, and analytical styles. Students are expected to develop brainstorming, drafting, revising and editing skills for their written work. Research and literacy analysis skills are a major feature of learning over the years so that students are ready for college level research expectations. Proficiency in the grammar, mechanics, and conventions of standard written English is also a part of the curricular goals.

If you're unsure about becoming active or boosting your level of physical activity for fear of getting hurt, the good news is moderate aerobic activity, like brisk walking for example, is generally safe for most people. Start slowly and slowly increase your exertion level. Finally, be sure and keep in mind, physical activity doesn't have to be work; it can be a lot of fun too!
