Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Yankton District Curriculum

The successful implementation of the Common Core Standards, which includes the delivery and assessment of curriculum in the core areas of Language Arts, Mathematics, Social Studies, and Science, by the State of South Dakota along with the Yankton City School District, is one goal of this school district. These standards are being adopted across the nation as they offer depth and a clear scope for learning in the subject areas.

In the teaching of Language Arts, students are exposed to many genres of literature, and are required to show comprehension of the material by making connections and reflection using critical thinking skills, such as analyzing meaning, symbolism, and synthesizing the information. Students in Math are challenged to impart their critical thinking skills as well, as they must use the same higher-levels of thinking, such as analyzing and synthesizing mathematical information. The Yankton City School District instructors effectively encourage these types of critical thinking skills to prepare the students for a successful future.

Chalk Talk: Support Systems

Support from the community foundations, such as the school booster club or foundation, provides so very much for the various aspects of the school system. Some foundations depend, and welcome, assistance from businesses and community leaders, and many receive this assistance. It is for such a great cause, as boosters and foundations can help athletes that need financial assistance, school organizations, classroom materials, events, and much more. Booster clubs and foundations that help school systems are irreplaceable!
