Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Ypsilanti District Curriculum

The curriculum includes English which includes word study, literature, reading comprehension and writing. Math which includes simple math, solving equations, number recognition, geometry, measurements and other areas prepares students for college level work if they choose. Science understanding emphasizes the scientific process, earth science, physical science, biology and other areas. Social Studies include civics, economics, politics, history and cultural topics.

This new district will gauge the students’ performance and understanding by using benchmark testing to permit promotion to the next grade. The testing is aligned to the curriculum in that the questions asked ensure that the objectives detailed in the curriculum are being taught and learned by each student. These assessments can be used throughout the year to provide key data to educators as to where each student is at in achieving subject area proficiency.

Chalk Talk: What Is Benchmark Testing?

Benchmark Testing is used in every grade. These tests are used to measure a child's ability to understand the subject matter in core required classes like English, Science and Math. The scores are used to establish the students’ placement in the next grade and remains a permanent part of their school records. Doing well on these tests is very important. Many students know the material but have difficulty with testing. A tutor can help your student do well by raising their confidence level and helping them to not only have a better understanding of the material but also have them understand the testing better!
