Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Yreka District Curriculum

Science and Math have both been designed to provide a broad base of knowledge during the elementary years and move students towards more specialized course offerings in these areas during high school. Students learn basics of numeracy, quantities, measurement, and understanding data in Math, while in Science they learn the fundamentals of core scientific topics with a focus on the process of investigation and experimentation. In high school, students learn more in-depth strategies in geometry or algebra, and are able to take a number of Science courses such as Environmental Science or pre-Engineering classes.

Technology is used and taught about in these subjects as well. In Science, students learn about the nature and development of technologies. Throughout their classes, students use and learn with technology, which supports the goal of students preparing them for the learning and career opportunities which are available.

Yreka District Curriculum Used in Our In-Home Tutoring Programs

The goal of the educational experience for students in Yreka’s schools is to give them the base of knowledge and skills within all subjects that bring about the ability to comprehend, interpret, and evaluate information. Students are expected to become problem-solvers and understand different process-oriented approaches to work through assignments or projects. The curriculum is designed to bring about these goals, and through different subjects, students are able to put in place these building blocks which prepare them for their college and career pursuits.

Language Arts places its major emphasis on reading and writing. Other communication skills like speaking, oral presentations, and critically listening to discussions are also outcomes in this curriculum framework. In reading, students are expected to read all types of literary texts and non-fiction in all content areas. They are taught ways to process information, understand it, and be able to respond to it. Much of their response occurs through writing, and students also learn how to write for a variety of purposes with attention to conventions of the language and the development of their voice.

We currently cover the following Yreka-area school district: Yreka Union High School District, Yreka Union School District.
