Dryden District Curriculum Used in Our In-Home Tutoring Programs

The Ontario Curriculum is used in the public schools in Dryden. The curriculum describes the skills and knowledge requisite in each subject and then ties them to the underlying concepts that they foster. The curriculum is a framework that is used as an instructional tool to plan for teaching and learning. For example, the English curriculum describes the elements of reading and comprehending non-fiction so that students may develop critical and analytic thinking skills. Students who gain proficiency in the knowledge described in the curriculum will be prepared for future academic and career pursuits.

We currently cover the following Dryden-area school districts: Keewatin-Patricia District School Board and Northwest Catholic District School Board.

Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Dryden District Curriculum

In math, students will learn the fundamentals of algebra which will bring about problem-solving type thought. They begin by learning how to perform numerical operations with positive and negative integers, as well as fractions, decimals and percents. This gives them a foundation for the algebra, geometry and data analysis they will encounter in high school. Students acquire the skills to perform operations on vectors, and also learn how to represent and model with vector quantities. The ability to construct and use mathematical models is important and demonstrates students ability to extrapolate information.

In the social studies and history curriculum, students learn about the past as far back as ancient history and about how modern events have unfolded. The falls of Rome and Greece are studied in terms of the rise of feudalism in Europe. Students learn how the manorial system established certain families with a wealth of power while subjugating other families into feudal farming. Students also examine how the transition to feudalism gave rise to powerful monarchies and the establishment of churches throughout Europe.
