I believe it is very important to make connections with students, get to know them, their interests, strengths, characteristics, etc. This will build a positive relationship with the student and teacher and allow the student to feel comfortable and trust the teacher. I believe that optimal learning happens when a student feels safe in his or her learning environment and is able to take risks and make mistakes. In combination with all of this I believe that learning should be fun and thought of as a life long journey.
I grew up attending public school in my small home town. After graduating high school in 2009, I attended the University of Victoria for five years. Here I attained my Bachelors of Education (Elementary Curriculum) and took an extra year of Art Education.
I have completed three practica teaching Kindergarten, Grade 3, and a Grade 4/5 split. I have tutored three students in Math, Reading and Writing. I have also taught gymnastics (preschool to age 10), adult immigrants about Canadian finances, and summer camps. In addition, I have extensive experience volunteering with children in informal teaching situations.
I taught gymnastics and participated in ballet and jazz dancing for many years. I have played sports such as soccer, volleyball, basketball, and rugby. I also enjoy music and have played instruments (beginner level) including the trombone, ukulele, recorder, and guitar. I am also passionate about yoga, pilates, and outdoor activities such as hiking, skiing, and kayaking.
