Waterford District and Curriculum
The goal of the curriculum used in Waterford is to help students gain skills and understand concepts that are central to each subject area. The design of the curriculum is to present key goals which are based on the general subject principles. On a more detailed level, the skills that students will learn each year are laid out so that teaching objectives are clear and can be measured on assessments. The importance of the assessments is to show students where they are succeeding and where there may need to be more instruction.
The Language Arts framework is laid out to support learning across the curriculum by focusing on the goals of reading, writing, listening and speaking. Students are taught strategies to understand the key ideas and details in texts from all genres, ways to understand the structure of language, and how to craft written expression. As students develop these skills, they become able to integrate knowledge and ideas and to express them clearly.
We currently cover the following Waterford-area school district: Waterford Unified School District.
Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Waterford District Curriculum
The foundation for Math learning is aimed at instilling computational, reasoning, and problem-solving skills. In elementary and middle school, students are introduced to basic functions in numerical and algebraic operations, geometry, and measurement and data. Students are taught skills to use computational tools and modeling to problem-solve and ways to use the information they have to reason in quantitative, logical and abstract terms.
This curricular model which emphasizes big picture goals with the precise skills necessary to reach those outcomes has proven highly successful and is the framework that is used in other subjects like History and Social Studies, the Sciences, Language and for specialized programs which students may opt-in to during high school.
