Chalk Talk: Overcoming Blank Minds
Many students have experienced sitting in a classroom, a test in front of them, and having a blank mind. There are ways that parents can help them overcome this problem. If the child comes home and informs the parent that they froze at test time, parents need to be understanding and share a time it happened to them, if it has. Next, help the child realize that just by taking a few deep breaths, they will relax and some of the material may come to their mind. Talk to them about taking a moment and singing a song silently, in their mind. This takes their mind off of the matter at hand and may revive what was forgotten. Another method is to think of a fun time in their lives as a way to relax. Finally, practice each of these methods at home, until they become so comfortable that it will come naturally the next time they face a test.
