Vancouver District Curriculum Used in Our In-Home Tutoring Programs

The curriculum followed in Vancouver Public Schools offers a cohesive, 21st century education for all students. In addition to the core curriculum, the district offers many magnet programs covering a range of topics. English Language Arts covers critical thinking and literary analysism going beyond a basic grammar and phonics approach. Students are required to read one novel per grading period and complete one research paper per year. This allows students to explore and interact with literature, which helps build a love of learning and reading. In addition to these requirements, all must complete a senior culminating project that includes a research paper and formal oral presentation.

We currently cover the following Vancouver-area school district: Vancouver Public Schools.

Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Vancouver District Curriculum

The Math curriculum in Vancouver Public Schools also takes a holistic approach to learning math. Students are required to know operations, changes in dimension, and both US and metric measurement systems. Students can choose one of two math pathways, both of which will teach them the required skills necessary for graduation. They may choose to take the Algebra 1, Geometry, Algebra 2 series or the integrated math series.

The Science curriculum focuses on critical thinking and problem solving skills, rather than memorization of facts. The district curriculum focuses on investigative skills and problem solving throughout the Science curriculum. As freshman, students are required to take Integrated Physical Science or Earth Science and as sophomores students must take Biology. Beyond that, classes in Chemistry, Physics, and topics in Engineering and Technology are also offered.

Chalk Talk: Answering Short Answer Questions

Short answer tests generally ask questions that need direct answers. Many ask the student to make a list, name, define something or identify and object. So to help answer this type of questions, children and parents can review notes that were taken in class or from the reading to prepare for information that falls under these. Another way to prepare for these tests is to prepare flashcards with the key term, the dates, or the concept on one side, then place the answer on the other side. By having the child write the answer down it reminds the student of the material. Another method is to go through the question before answering it and underlining key words or phrases to remind the student as to what to answer. Finally, remind the child to never leave the question blank. At times, teachers will give partial credit if the student attempts to seriously answer the question. Practicing these methods at home can help the student stay calm on test day.
