Yakima District Curriculum Used in Our In-Home Tutoring Programs
Yakima’s schools use a roadmap to success for their students that is available for everyone to review on school and district websites. This allows parents to not only look at current curriculum for their child’s school, but also to have the ability to look into the future curriculum, and what will be expected of their children at any school they will be attending. English Language Arts follows a very detailed curriculum that integrates reading with critical thought and writing. This allows students to understand how reading and writing are intertwined, making them more likely to become investors in their own learning. In addition to reading and writing, students participate in a mechanics and grammar curriculum all the way through high school, which allows them to enhance and apply skills learned in the lower grades.

Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Yakima District Curriculum
The Math curriculum focuses on application and critical thinking, in addition to mechanics, computation and calculation. Students are required to take three years of math to graduate and can choose one of two pathways to complete this requirement. They are able to complete the Algebra 1, Geometry and Algebra 2 classes or the integrated three-year math program. Each pathway teaches the same skills, just in a different order and style.
The Science programs in Yakima focus on scientific literacy and creating critical thinkers. Students do not just learn scientific facts, they collect and analyze data, research current events in science and apply their reading, writing, and math skills to problems they encounter during investigations. - Technology Use in the District - Yakima School District has collaborated with Cisco to provide computers to over 15,300 students in the district. This valuable partnership is allowing technology to be put in the hands of students. Having technology for students not only increases engagement in the classroom and content areas, but also increases the technological literacy of students allowing them to become college and career ready.
- STEM Forums and Resources - It is no secret that the United States is behind other industrialized nations in producing students who are literate in science, technology, engineering and math. Many school districts are beginning to offer classes and pathways in these fields, but Yakima Public Schools is taking it one step further. There are regular STEM Forums in which members of the community are able to give input on what STEM skills the students need. This keeps jobs, and skilled workers, in the community after graduation.
- Collaboration with NPR - Anything that will put students on a career path they enjoy should be considered a win, so the program through Yakima Public Schools and Washington State University's Northwest Public Radio should be considered another opportunity for student success. Students in the multimedia classes in the high schools will have the opportunity to work within the local National Public Radio (NPR) station to learn about science, public relations, communication and business.

Chalk Talk: Helping with a Writing Assignment
When a child becomes stumped by a writing assignment, there are ways that a parent can help the child progress. The first step is to talk with the child about the assignment and the expectations from the writing. If the child is unsure of what is expected from an assignment, parents can let them know that teachers enjoy answering questions, especially if it will help. After this, ask them to explain the assignment. Ask any questions to help clear things up, or explain instructions, if needed, in words that the child can understand better. Then ask if the teacher gave the class an outline of the assignment, if so, look at it together. If not, work with the child to create one on the project. Finally, Parents should ask the child to explain the entire assignment so they can see the clarity in their work. If there are still uncertainties, ask the teacher directly. There may be more children in the class who are having difficulties and this will help point it out.
