Chalk Talk: Importance of Parental Presence

It is difficult to determine how much parenting a teen needs. They are stretching for independence, yet they still are tied to their family. To help parents decide how much attention is good, they need to consider three items. First, teenagers like to test the limits that are set before them. Some of this is to receive a reaction from parents. When this happens, parents need to be there to set the limit, and to let them know that you are concerned for their safety. The next is to help the teen feel emotional safe. This is an age where emotions are on the edge. Parents can help by being there to listen and give advice if asked. Otherwise, see if the teen and parent can work out a plan together. Finally, in high school, it is easy for teens to fall behind in classrooms and feel like it does not matter to anyone. If this seems to be an issue parents should call the guidance counselor to ask for an evaluation, or to see of the number if classes can be changed.
