Taft District and Curriculum
The aim of the curriculum used in Taft’s schools is to provide high standards for all students, a clear set of guidelines for instructional planning, a framework that prepares students for college and career, and to provide for the development of critical thinking and problem-solving skills. Literacy, communication, problem-solving, and attention to process are central goals for the whole of the curriculum, and these goals are supported by the grade-level expectations for learning skills and content in each subject.
Language Arts centers on the literacy skills students require for understanding fictional genres and non-fiction texts. Students read a diverse selection and are taught to develop strategies to read deeply, respond, connect, and use information to solve problems. Writing is expected in all forms from personal and reflective to more complex analytic or expository writing. Language conventions that instill formal English are taught and students are expected to use the language properly on formal writing tasks.

Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Taft District Curriculum
Math has been developed to provide students with increasingly advanced skills in areas like number operations, geometry and measurement, algebraic functions, and data analysis. In high school, students move towards abstract reasoning using expressions and equations, proofs and models to come to a precise and accurate solution. The Sciences are expanding in scope, although the basis of instruction in the concepts, principles, and processes of the basic sciences is the foundation students start with. There are many advanced offerings in Science at the high school level, and students will need to use their literacy and problem-solving skills towards these studies.

- Oil Technology Academy - Due to Taft's central location in the oil-industry, the school has responded by creating an Academy style school for students interested in pursuing a career in this field. The program is for students in grades 10-12 and provides a strong curricular experience that prepares students for advanced study and work opportunities in the field. There is significant participation from industry leaders with the goal of preparing students to become innovators in the field of oil technology.
- AVID at TUHS - The AVID (Advancement via Individual Determination) Program at Taft Union High School is designed to support students who are in the 50-80th percentile on traditional measures of academic achievement and who are seeking a career that begins with college. Students are prepared to take on Honors or Advanced Placement courses and provided with individualized attention to track their progress toward their goals.
- STEM Education at Taft College - Taft College is working towards generating enthusiasm in the STEM fields of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math for students in the city. For students in grades K-12, they offer summer programs, a Young Innovators Club, enrichment opportunities throughout the year, and bridge programs to help students envision a college future in one of these fields.
