Bainbridge District Curriculum Used in Our In-Home Tutoring Programs
Bainbridge Island School District follows the Washington State Standards in all curricular areas and develops all curriculum around these standards. Kindergartners begin to learn writing by understanding that there is a world and audience beyond themselves. In reading, they begin to understand the relationship betweens the letters of the alphabet and their sounds. In the elementary grades, students build on these skills until they reach sixth grade. In sixth grade, students are able to write a complete essay that analyzes and elaborates on a given topic and in reading are able to discuss and reflect on both literary and informational text. The elementary English Language Arts curriculum adopted for the district is Good Habits, Great Readers. Teachers use this as a basis for instruction, adding their own material as needed to help students achieve.

Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Bainbridge District Curriculum
The Math curriculum starts in Kindergarten with students separating and joining objects as a basis for understanding addition, subtraction, and quantities. By the end of their elementary years, students will be solving one variable equations and be ready to advance to the middle school mathematics curriculum. Science in elementary school focuses on understanding the world around them and asking questions. By the end of elementary school, students are able to design experiments to answer their questions.
By high school, students have a base level of knowledge in all subjects that assist them in being successful. Freshman and sophomore students take composition classes their first two years of high school to solidify their skills, and then move on to English Language Arts electives to explore writing and literature. The district has adopted the Holt McDougal Math curriculum for Algebra 1, Geometry and Algebra 2, which all students must complete. After completing the basic series, students may take upper division math electives. Students in the tenth grade must take Biology, and any other science electives they choose in the eleventh and twelfth grades.

Keeping Informed: Recent Bainbridge Educational News
- STEM Blog - Most districts in the country understand the importance of a strong science education in today’s changing world, and have implemented some sort of STEM curriculum at their schools. What makes this district unique is the use of the STEM blog. This blog allows students to display and write about their work which further prepares them for the workforce after high school.
- Art Docent Program - The Art Docent Program connects volunteers from the community with K-6 classrooms in district elementary schools. These docents create and present art appreciation units with the students, as well as work on long-term projects with the students and the teachers. This program strengthens the ties between the schools and the community.
- Moodle - Every teacher in the district has access to Moodle to create pages for their classroom. Moodle is an e-learning system that creates open access to the course at any time of the day for both parents and students. It can be used simply as a communication pathway or for full hybridization of the classroom.

Chalk Talk: Teens and Sleep
The teenage years are filled with emotional, physical and hormonal changes. In order for these changes to occur the body requires sleep. Usually about nine hours of sleep a night. If a teen does not receive enough sleep it will reflect on their academic performance, their moods and their behavior. The driving teen that is suffering from lack of sleep is also more likely to have car accidents, be obese and to be depressed or anxious. To help to make sure they receive enough sleep, parents need to explain to the teen why it is so important and they need to remember to be a good role model. Also parents should remind the teens that their beds should be used for sleeping, not homework or entertainment. Also daily exercise, especially late in the afternoon, can also help them to sleep better. Finally, encourage them to wake at the same time every day, even on the weekend.
