Bonney Lake District Curriculum Used in Our In-Home Tutoring Programs
Sumner School District offers a comprehensive curriculum in English Language Arts, Math, and Science to all students living in the Bonney Lake area. Students in elementary school begin learning basic skills in Kindergarten that will carry them through the end of their high school career and beyond. The district does have built in programs at each level to identify and intervene for any student that is struggling in any of their academic skills. Students are placed in these programs based on teacher observations and assessments. In addition to the adopted curriculum, teachers work collaboratively to create lessons and activities to help the students understand the standards.

Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Bonney Lake District Curriculum
In elementary school, the curriculum focuses on the skills students will need to be successful in school and life while the curriculum in middle and high school works to enhance skills but the focus of the students’ education moves to content and the ability to analyze and process new information. Students learn how to read and write a cohesive paragraph in elementary school, they learn number sense, the manipulation of numbers, and inquiry into science. In middle and high school, students begin to apply these skills in classes such as Literature, Algebra, Geometry, Biology, Chemistry, and Calculus.
The reading curriculum is broken into five elements that are taught and practiced at every grade level. The five strands are standards, leadership, system wide communication, instruction and intervention. Students who are below grade level in reading utilize either the READ 180 program or Phonics Blitz program to get them to grade level. These programs are used with the Washington State Standards for English Language Arts that all students follow.

- Kindergarten JumpStart - Sumner School District offers a Kindergarten-readiness summer program for select students. This program helps ease the students into Kindergarten by providing them with the social skills necessary to succeed in a classroom, such as working in a group and following directions. The program is offered in three sessions throughout the summer and is team-taught by a certificated preschool teacher and a certificated Kindergarten teacher.
- Recreation Programs - The school district does an outstanding job in providing recreation programs before and after school for all students in its elementary schools. The program provides a safe environment for students outside of school hours, and provides parents peace of mind knowing their children are safe and productive. The program offers before and after school care by trained staff, in addition to after school sports programs for elementary students.
- Bullying Prevention - Bullying has become an issue at the forethought of many parents and educators in the cyberage. Sumner School District has laid out a comprehensive plan on how to combat bullying through training and prevention. This program provides workshops and trainings for parents, teachers, administrators, and students to ensure students do not have to deal with bullying in school. The bullying prevention program focuses on families and students in all age groups.

Chalk Talk: Math at Home
Children come home with math homework several days a week. Parents may not always be sure how much to help with this work. They need to remember when a child become frustrated with math that they are learning new concepts all the time, so where it may seem easy to a parent to a child it might as well be college level math. When a child want to talk or needs help with math, parents should agree in a positive manner. Even if they do not ask, try to find a few minutes every night to review math concepts, this could be through cooking, or games. However it is worked in by doing math every day it can help to make math easier for the child in the long run. Finally, no matter the age or grade of the child, parents need to make sure to know the standards that are set forth by the state and they need to stay in touch with the teacher to see if there are specific areas to focus on.
