Bremerton District Curriculum Used in Our In-Home Tutoring Programs
Bremerton School District has implemented the Common Core State Standards, which is a curriculum that follows learning strands that do not change from grades K-12. Students build on skills from year to year to become proficient in reading, writing, and math – skills that will allow them to be successful regardless of what path is chosen after high school. These abilities develop the critical thinking abilities required in college academics as well as career pursuits, and support the college and career readiness goals of the district. Additionally, the ability to innovate, collaborate, and think creatively are instilled through a range of courses and extracurricular activities.

Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Bremerton District Curriculum
In middle and high school, students move away from learning skills and move toward applying skills to interpreting and evaluating content. Middle school students take English Language Arts which are more comprehensive classes that begin to teach students how to analyze literary and informational texts using reading and writing skills obtained in elementary school. High school students continue to develop reading and writing skills through elective courses and required composition courses. Students in high school also take the Algebra 1, Geometry, and Algebra 2 sequence in addition to the higher-level math electives all of which utilize math skills learned in the K-6 curriculum.
The district has adopted the Open Court Reading Curriculum and Step Up To Writing Curriculum for all students in grades K-6. The reading series focuses on skills in decoding, comprehension, investigation and inquiry, and writing. The skills level progresses with the students through elementary school. The writing curriculum not only emphasizes common writing skills and techniques, but also uses writing as a tool for learning content. Math skill acquisition begins in kindergarten and progress through sixth grade.

Keeping Informed: Recent Bremerton Educational News
- Elementary STEM - STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) have become essential subject areas in the schools. In Pemberton, the elementary students are exposed to a program which consists of unique curriculum and guiding questions at each grade level. In addition to classroom and lab work, students in this program have the opportunity to participate in many field experiments throughout their course of study.
- Spanish Immersion - The Spanish Immersion Program for elementary students immerses English-speaking students in Spanish-speaking classrooms throughout the schools day. Students enrolled in this program are bilingual by graduation and better able to compete for jobs outside of high school. Instruction is delivered in English and Spanish, increasing language acquisition for all students. All information sent home to parents is sent in English and students must have a strong command of English before being admitted to the program.
- Online Education - It is sometimes difficult to fit in all required classes for high school students during the school day. Online Education in Bremerton schools allows high school students to take classes online that do not fit in the student’s schedule, or that the school does not offer. Many electives, languages and AP classes that are not taught traditionally in the district are available to students online. Students are also able to take remedial and core classes through the online program.

Chalk Talk: College-Bound Essentials
Most colleges and universities send lists of items they feel are needed by any student attending their school. However, there are other items that most students need before they begin this journey. First, if they will be taking public transportation, a bus pass will be gladly accepted by many students. If they will be taking their own vehicle to school, a car care package with jumper cables, an emergency hammer, and a membership into an automobile association will save hours of worry. For students living in dorms, a tote for taking toiletries from their room to the bathroom will help them make sure they can take their personal care products easily with them. Finally, send them with memories of a family outing by going on a trip, complete with photos, so the student and the family can remember the days before college with smiles on their faces.
