Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Lakes CDP District Curriculum

Scientific inquiry and problem-solving is the foundation of the MSBSD Science curriculum. From the early grades through high school, teachers take advantage of the many science education programs offered by area institutions such as fish hatcheries and the Sitka Sound Science Center. Students are able to distinguish hypotheses and theories, and understand the way that scientists investigate and experiment in understanding a phenomenon.

The emphasis in elementary reading and language arts is the development of a love of reading and proficiency in reading, writing, speaking, and listening.  Middle and high school students learn to respond critically to fiction and nonfiction literature, practice the art of debate and explore journalism and theatre. The conventions of the language are also taught and students are expected to conduct formal writing tasks for a variety of purposes. The learning students accomplish in core subjects prepares them for entry into a number of career and academic opportunities.
