Educating Our Parents: Understanding the East Wenatchee District Curriculum
In Math, students use the Math Expressions curriculum for all of elementary school, which lets them become familiar with the style and focus on learning basic math skills that will help them be successful in upper level math courses. Science content is taught starting in first grade and standards repeat while deepening during the elementary grades. This allows students to have a basic working knowledge of several scientific principles.
Middle school and high school curriculum continue to develop foundational level skills acquired in elementary by applying these skills to content curriculum. Students are allowed to take electives in core curriculum areas from sixth grade and beyond. Students do have some non-negotiable classes such as freshman composition, Algebra and Geometry. Students use the Holt mathematics curriculum from sixth grade math through Geometry, so they become familiar with the curriculum and this allows them to focus on the content.

Chalk Talk: Making Choices
Learning how to make choices is not easy for children, no matter what the age. Each stage has its own choices and ways parents can help. To begin, allow the child a choice when it is time for a snack. This allows them time to learn how they feel about items and how to let their feelings be expressed. Vacations are another way to show children how to make decisions. This can be a family affair where each one has a vote and the most votes win. Each child states their choice and gives their reasons so they can see that their values count. Other ways to open up choices are when shopping for clothing. Allow them to make choices that fit in with guidelines set forth by the school or other organizations they are a part of. Finally, children can be overwhelmed when it comes to extracurricular activities. To help them when it comes to deciding what they want to take part in, limit them to two or three activities. This helps them to learn how to prioritize.
