The curriculum for English Language Arts, Math and Science all use a progressive approach by relying on skills learned in the previous year to build on and learn new skills. Students learn all foundational skills necessary in English, Math and Science in order to be successful in middle and high school. English Language Arts focuses on phonetics and comprehension and the Math curriculum focuses on number sense and algebraic awareness. The middle and high school curriculum continue to build fundamental skills in reading, writing, math and science through grade 10. Differentiation begins in grade 7 when students are able to take on advanced Math and English classes, based on their proficiency in elementary school.

We currently cover the following Ephrata-area school district: Ephrata School District.

Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Ephrata District Curriculum

In English Language Arts, there is a particular emphasis on critical reading and analytic writing. Students develop the skills to analyze works of fiction and non-fiction, and are able to derive meaning from both. They also use the texts they read as a platform to develop their writing, and explain their analytic thoughts about the texts. By the end of middle school, students are able to use skills learned in elementary school and developed in middle school to write a variety of essays, including persuasive and explanatory.

In high school, students have a range of options to continue the process of understanding the foundational subjects and are also offered electives and advanced courses that help them determine possible pursuits for their future. The Career Technical Education opportunities are also available to students who wish to explore areas of potential interest while in high school. These also help to fulfill some of the 21st century learning goals such as the development of innovative thinking, the ability to collaborate, and the opportunity to think creatively.

Chalk Talk: Test Anxiety

When children face a test with so much anxiety they freeze or cannot remember anything they have studied, they will not do well on the test and they lose confidence. The child has been taught all the material in class, so a parent’s job is to help the child relax so they can face the test feeling their best. Parents can help a child on test day by teaching them to breathe deeply for a breath or two to help ease their body and mind. They could also be helped by learning to think of something enjoyable for a minute or two when the tense feeling come on them. Rewards can also be used to help the child have a positive outlook. Perhaps after the test give the child something they look forward to such as an ice cream cone. The night before a test help the child to get a good night’s sleep. This can be done by making sure everything is ready for school the next day and then taking a few minutes to read a story together or some other activity that helps them to relax.
