Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Puyallup District Curriculum

In middle school and high school, students continue to enhance fundamental reading and writing skills in both their Composition and Math classes. They are able to take electives in both middle school and high school after finishing the required basic classes in English Language Arts, Math and Science.

Objectives designed to teach and assess communication skills include rubrics of expectations for technical writing, visual communication, and artistic expression as well. In math, students are expected to demonstrate problem solving skills by selecting and implementing appropriate strategies, demonstrating evidence of their understanding of mathematical concepts, and showing accurate solutions and work. Finally, students need to have the ability to work collaboratively in diverse groups by actively working toward goals set by the group, consistently contributing to the group, being sensitive to the feelings and valuing the options of their group members, and fulfilling a specific role within the group.

Chalk Talk: Editing Writing

Editing can help take a child’s work to a higher level. Parents can help by making a special area just for writing. This area will have all of the supplies needed for writing, such as paper, dictionary, stapler, writing instruments and more. Writing is something that cannot be forced, so if the child isn’t in the mood, it may be better for them to step away and take a break before they tackle this assignment. Along with this goes letting the child decide when a draft is finished. It may not be perfect but it will reflect the child’s work. Misspellings happen and the best way for them to learn is to sound words out themselves or encourage them to use a dictionary. When the editing is done, make the work into a book. It can then be given to someone else to read or the author may decide to share it with family members. By making writing fun and personal it can change from a job they have to do to one they want to do.
