Bluewater District Curriculum Used in Our In-Home Tutoring Programs

The schools in Bluewater use the Ontario Curriculum to guide the instructional process. This curriculum provides plans for the elementary and secondary grades in all subjects and programs in the schools. The goal is to have a unified framework for subject-area learning so that student’s knowledge builds logically and sequentially over the years. This allows them to use prior knowledge and reflective thinking which are keys to being able to analyze and problem- solve effectively. Students also have many additional programs they can choose to take during elementary and secondary school. The language immersion programs use the Ontario Curriculum for subject-area teaching which is enhanced by the bilingual setting.

We currently cover the following Bluewater-area school districts: Bluewater District School Board and Bruce-Grey Catholic District School Board.

Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Bluewater District Curriculum

The outcomes anticipated in the curriculum are that students will gain both content knowledge as well as learning and thinking strategies applicable to all learning challenges. For instance, Math helps students to develop logical reasoning and problem-solving skills and English brings about interpretative and analytic thinking. Developing the different modes of communication in Math, Science and English are central to the learning objectives in these areas. Students are expected to produce written work in all subjects and are taught ways to approach writing for different audiences.

In Social Studies, students become informed about the world, its history and geography, world cultures, and government and economic concepts. In the Economics strand, students learn how the global economy benefits some and not others, while also acquiring an understanding that the distribution of economic wealth and power shifts over time. As students are introduced to increasingly complex concepts, there research skills are also developed through the assignments they are given to evaluate and analyze information pertaining to a world issue.

Chalk Talk: Helping Children Identify Mood and Emotion through Music

In a little experiment at home or in school, parents and teachers can demonstrate to children how music can express and relay mood. You will need a few supplies: writing utensils, paper, and selected scenes from movies. It is important to choose scenes that exhibit a variety of moods and emotions, such as sad, scary, happy, surprising, dramatic, or intense. Each movie scene should be no more than one minute in length. Watch the movie scenes together, prompting children to focus on a few details of the music: instruments, tempo, rhythm, pitch, and overall reactions. Discuss how the music made them feel and why. How do the different instruments express mood? Can the same instrument relay different moods? How do fast or slow tempos make you feel? In what way does a low pitch alter the audiences’ mood differently than a high pitch? You can ask many questions and have numerous conversations about music and mood, but the most important lesson to teach is how music can be language for expression and interpretation between the artist and audience.
