Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Madison District Curriculum

The core curriculum of the Madison City School District is made up of Language Arts, Science, Social Studies,
Mathematics, Music, Art, Technology, World Languages, and Physical Education. The Madison City School District
follows the State Standards of Alabama, and each student is assessed to ensure mastery of the subjects that
are completed.

Mathematics is instructed and developed from the ground-up using a syllabus created to bring about a sense of
understanding, aptitude, theoretical understanding, and fluency in the subject. The Language Arts program
concentrates on developing analytic literacy skills. The additional core classes have a goal of supporting
literacy, effective communication, and critical thinking in all subject areas.

Keeping Informed: Recent Madison Educational News

  • Home Instruction for Parents of Preschool Youngsters - HIPPY is a program for parents of children ages 3, 4, and 5. This program helps parents gain the strategies to prepare their preschooler for school. The parents receive books and learning materials, such as hands-on math manipulatives, word cards, language arts games, social studies activities, and science learning materials to use with their child in the years before school to give them a jump start on their education.
  • Bob Jones High School HOSA Competition - Fifteen students in the schools' HOSA program have qualified to participate at Nationals during the Alabama HOSA Leadership seminar and competition. HOSA stands for Health Occupation Students of America, and this program prepares high school students for futures in the medical field of their choice.
  • 2005 ACCESS Pilot Site - The ACCESS Helping (Students Achieve Educational Success) Program is Governor Riley's initiative for Distance Learning. Madison City Schools understands that all students may have to study off campus for any reason, so they have offered a way for students to stay on track while at home.
