Thames Centre District Curriculum Used in Our In-Home Tutoring Programs

The schools in Thames Centre have developed courses and programs that are aligned to the curriculum developed by the Ontario Ministry of Education. The core academic courses of English, History, Math and Science are detailed as a continuum of learning that students complete from elementary school through the end of high school. This foundation is combined with the enrichment subjects available for students to pursue and serve as a means for students to make connections within their learning.

We currently cover the following Thames Centre-area school districts: London District Catholic School Board and Thames Valley District School Board.

Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Thames Centre District Curriculum

In Math, students learn problem-solving techniques that they can apply in other subjects and in real world situations. They develop spatial reasoning through geometry and become literate in quantitative data through probability, ratios, and statistics. This provides a basis for theoretical and practical applications in algebra, geometry, and advanced math as well as topics in engineering, technology, and the sciences.

The chance that students have to combine these core academic skills with areas that they have chosen to pursue such as the Environmental Education programs, Music Enrichment programs, and International Language Programs allows students to see the relevancy and connections in their subjects. The further goal within all these offerings are that students are prepared for success in advanced studies and career pursuits.

Chalk Talk: Skills Teens Need

It may appear that teens know all they need to when it comes to technology. There are some skills that they do not know but will become helpful. Typing is one of the skills. Many colleges allow students to take notes on laptops in the classroom. The ability to use the keyboard will be helpful. Word processing skills and the ability to use spreadsheet are also helpful. Students should be able to format documents, including creating page numbers and footnotes. They should also have, at least, a rudimentary knowledge of Excel. It is helpful if they are able to keep track of data in a spreadsheet as well as use basic formula and graphing functions. One other skill they can use is a knowledge of how to use PowerPoint. This helps in making presentations in many of their classes. With these skills, the student should be one step more prepared for success in college.
