Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Renfrew District Curriculum

In Math and Science, students are called upon to develop the problem-solving and investigative processes of inquiry and precise decision-making. Students learn how to operate, analyze, model and manipulate data, shapes, lines and equations. In Science, the concepts inherent to biology, chemistry and physics, and earth and space science are systematically taught with integrative lab experiments. Fundamental principles of technology and engineering are also infused into this curriculum.

Students literacy within all subjects is an over-arching goal of the curriculum and English classes teach students significant amounts of non-fiction and expository writing skills so that they are able to employ these in other subjects. The development of critical reading and expression are major objectives alongside the goal that students become discerning readers who increase their cultural awareness through reading.

Chalk Talk: Astronomy

Astronomy is a part of each child's science curriculum. Some children take to the subject easily, while other do not. To help a child create an interest in, and succeed, in this area, parents can take a part in his area of education. This does not mean parents need to be experts, but when outside at night they can look up and begin a conversation with the child. By seeing what areas of astronomy excite the child, the parent can help lead them along. They can ask if the child can point out the Northern Star, of if they can share what phase the moon is in and what phase happens next. Parents can also talk about how the light from the stars that are being seen traveled light years. By opening up these areas of interest, a parent may be opening a new enthusiasm for the child.
