Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Troy District Curriculum

In mathematics, the teachers attend workshops to keep current on the best teaching practices. A hands-on curriculum is essential in the math program, and the teachers stress the achievement of the key competencies of number sense and operations, algebra, geometry, measurement, data analysis, and probability. The Alabama Learning Exchange (ALEX) is a great tool used by the teachers to effectively teach mathematics, as well as all subjects. Packed full of resources in all subject areas, from basic worksheets to online testing and technology resources, ALEX is an invaluable resource. This learning exchange also follows the Alabama State standards of learning, so teachers are benefiting from effective and data-driven lesson plans to best meet the needs of the students.

Chalk Talk: The Importance of Nutrition in Schools

The new USDA guidelines for school lunches are affecting children all over the country in a positive way. Many students, due to their economic status, receive free breakfast and lunch each day. For some students, school breakfast and lunch are the only balanced meals they receive each day. That is why it is vital that the schools serve nutritional meals, containing the nutrients needed for growing children. White bread has been substituted with whole wheat bread, protein has been added to entrees, more fresh fruits and vegetables are served to the children, and the students can only choose reduced fat milk or fresh juices. This is just another way the public school system is helping our children succeed throughout each school day.
