Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Valley City District Curriculum
The Valley City School District mathematics curriculum’s priority is students’ mastery of mathematical fundamentals. The curriculum initially focuses on the key concepts of number operations, informal algebraic and geometric concepts, and the structure of the number system for grades K-8. Students in grades 9-12 are expected to extend beyond the fundamentals to develop skills in critical thinking and problem solving while completing a rigorous series of algebra and geometry classes.
The Science curriculum is committed to students’ understanding of the basic principles of life, physical, and earth and space science. The Science department is also actively participating with the Valley City School District’s recently implemented detailed technology plan. This plan provides resources such as computers, internet access, and educational software to aid students understanding of how technology is shaping current scientific progress. Students are also taught the process of scientific inquiry through performing both physical and virtual experimentation.

Chalk Talk: What Is the Role of a Writing Tutor?
A writing tutor is able to help students focus in on their writing process, the development of their ideas, and the organization with which they approach written work. Writing is emphasized in the curriculum as it is an important aspect of critical thinking and necessary for college readiness. Writing is an individualized process in which an idea is crafted and put into a format that requires a number of steps like pre-writing, revising and extending, and editing. These are not natural skills to all students, and a writing tutor can help each student to create a method for taking these steps.
